What is Mental Health First Aid?

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) courses are a suite of internationally acclaimed and evidence-based, accredited training programs that empower and equip individuals with the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to support a friend, family member or co-worker experiencing a mental health problem or experiencing a crisis such as being suicidal.

Who delivers Mental Health First Aid training in Ireland?

Mental Health First Aid Ireland, operated by St John of God University Hospital, is the only organisation licensed by Mental Health First Aid International to deliver Mental Health First Aid training in the Republic of Ireland​.

What types of courses are available?

Mental Health First Aid Ireland offers:

- Youth Mental Health First Aid – for adults supporting young people aged 12–18.
- Adult Mental Health First Aid – for those supporting adults.
- Workplace Mental Health First Aid
- Adult Refresher Training – for those who have previously completed the Adult course and wish to keep their skills up to date (learn more).

All courses are delivered live, either in-person or online via a virtual classroom format.

Who can attend a Mental Health First Aid course?

Anyone aged 18 or over who is interested in learning how to support mental health in their community, workplace, or organisation is welcome to attend.

Please note:
This course is not a therapy or support group. It is not suitable for:
- Individuals under 18
- Anyone who has experienced a bereavement within the last 18 months

What will I learn?

Participants will learn how to:

- Identify signs of common mental health difficulties
- Approach and support someone experiencing distress
- Apply an internationally recognised communication framework
- Connect people with appropriate supports

How long is the course?

Courses are delivered live over two full days. Attendance for the full duration is required to receive a certificate of attendance.

What is the difference between the Adult and Youth courses?

- The Adult course focuses on recognising and supporting mental health difficulties in adults.
- The Youth course is for adults who support young people aged 12–18.

Do I need a background in mental health?

Not at all. The training is designed for everyone. It’s clear, accessible, and delivered in plain language with a focus on practical, skills-based learning.

Can I become a Mental Health First Aid instructor?

Yes, becoming a Mental Health First Aid Instructor is possible if you meet the eligibility criteria. If you’re interested in learning more about the process and what’s involved, we’d love to hear from you.

Is Mental Health First Aid Ireland affiliated with the HSE?

Some of our programmes are funded by the HSE, but all training is delivered by Mental Health First Aid Ireland in line with our strict quality standards.

Are other organisations offering ‘Mental Health First Aid’ in Ireland?

No. Only Mental Health First Aid Ireland is licensed by Mental Health First Aid International to deliver this training in Ireland. Any other organisation using the name is not authorised or licensed.

Will I be able to support someone in crisis after this training?

Mental Health First Aid training provides a clear, evidence-based action plan to help someone in distress. While you’re not expected to be a mental health professional, you’ll be equipped to offer first-line support and guide the person toward appropriate help.

Will I receive any materials during the course?

Yes. Every participant receives a Mental Health First Aid manual. This is a valuable resource that reinforces course content and supports continued learning after the training.

How do I know if I need a Refresher course?

If you completed the Adult Mental Health First Aid course more than two years ago, we recommend attending a Refresher course to update your knowledge and maintain your confidence in using the skills. You can find available Refresher dates here.

Is there evidence to support the effectiveness of the programme?

Yes. Peer-reviewed studies from Australia and internationally show that the programme:

- Improves mental health outcomes for both the person offering and receiving support
- Expands knowledge of mental health difficulties and treatment options
- Reduces stigma and improves mental health literacy
- Increases confidence in supporting others and encouraging professional help

One trial involving 301 participants found that those trained in Mental Health First Aid showed greater confidence in helping others, were more likely to suggest professional help, had improved agreement with health professionals about treatment, and held fewer stigmatising attitudes.
