About this course
This Mental Health First Aid course is designed for managers, supervisors, and employees who want to learn how to support a colleague who may be developing a mental health difficulty or experiencing a mental health crisis. Participants are introduced to a clear and practical framework for communication, equipping them to offer initial support and guide their co-worker towards appropriate professional help and other relevant supports in an empathetic and respectful manner. Each participant receives a copy of the Mental Health First Aid manual and a Certificate of Completion.
Mental Health First Aid training offers a proactive, evidence-based approach to workplace wellbeing. It can form a key element of an organisation’s wellness strategy, helping to foster a culture of support and understanding—not only within the workplace, but in the broader communities of colleagues, families, and friends. Mental health difficulties are a leading cause of absenteeism and presenteeism. They can impact an employee’s concentration, decision-making, memory, and motivation. Early interventions, such as Mental Health First Aid, contribute to a more inclusive and responsive workplace culture, where staff feel valued and supported.
Investing in Mental Health First Aid can also help build stronger, more trusting relationships between managers and team members, and create a psychologically safer and more compassionate working environment.

Evidence-basedResearch and evaluation have been integral to the Mental Health First Aid programme since its inception, led by co-founder Professor Anthony Jorm at the University of Melbourne. International studies have shown that Mental Health First Aid training is associated with improved knowledge of mental health problems, their treatments, and appropriate first aid strategies. It is also linked to a reduction in stigmatising attitudes, increased confidence, and a greater likelihood of offering support to someone in difficulty.
In Ireland, a 2022 study by Janine Horgan at the University of Limerick evaluated participants’ post-training experiences and helping behaviours. The findings confirmed that Mental Health First Aid training enhances knowledge and confidence in supporting others, while also highlighting the role of stigma, access to resources, and the importance of inclusive, supportive environments in enabling effective helping behaviours.
